Our Pet Rehabilitation Services and Equipment

The goal of pet rehabilitation services is to help your pet recover from surgery or an injury while reducing pain and improving mobility. They can also be used to help overweight animals get healthier. At West Park Animal Hospital, our caring team members work to customize our pet rehabilitation services to each pet’s needs. We offer various equipment and services that can help rehabilitate your pet, including:

Underwater Treadmill

One popular tool for pet rehabilitation is an underwater treadmill, which offers low-impact exercise for pets recovering from surgery, dealing with mobility issues, injuries, weight management, or certain neurological conditions like disc disease and degenerative myelopathy. The underwater treadmill provides an environment of warm water that is soothing for your pet, allowing them to exercise with less stress and weight on their joints. Walking on an underwater treadmill can help your pet build muscle, experience pain relief, and increase blood flow to support a fast recovery.

MLS Laser Therapy

An innovative rehabilitative therapy option for pets is MLS laser therapy, which is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-level lasers to penetrate your pet’s tissue and stimulate their cells to produce a chemical called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). When ATP is produced, it helps provide pain relief and decreases inflammation, which encourages blood flow and faster healing. It can be used for both acute injuries and chronic conditions, as well as post-surgery pain and more.

TENS Unit

It can be hard to see your pet in pain and you may be looking for a rehabilitation option that helps relieve it. One option for pet pain relief is a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit, which is a battery-operated device that sends small electrical impulses to a pet’s skin and stimulates nerve fibers. When the fibers get stimulated, the pain signals that are usually sent to the brain get disrupted, resulting in less pain for your pet. TENS units can be used for animals with chronic pain conditions, as well as pain from surgery or an injury.

Massage Therapy

Another rehabilitation service for pets is massage therapy or soft tissue manipulation. You may think massage is only for humans, but your pet can also benefit from massages. They can be used for pain and tension relief, increased blood flow, improved mobility, and decreased anxiety and nervousness.

Therapeutic Exercise and Physical Rehabilitation

If your pet is dealing with an injury, sore surgery site, or weight issue, they can experience muscle atrophy, weakness, scar tissue development, and more symptoms that hold them back. To help relieve these issues and their related pain, therapeutic and rehabilitation exercises can be used. Like physical therapy for humans, these services help to increase the range of motion, build muscle, and reduce pain in your pet. Along with physical exercises, your pet may receive hot or cold therapy, hydrotherapy, or other related treatments.
